GROSCHOPP was founded in 1930 as Wincharger. Wincharger, based in Sioux City, Iowa, is a pioneer in the development of wind turbines and sells mainly in rural areas of the United States where modern electric service is not yet widespread. By the late 1930s, the young company attracted the attention of Zenith Radio Corporation, which sought to bring Wincharger dynamo-powered radios to rural areas. During World War II, Wincharger became the largest generator and inverter manufacturer, capitalizing on its success in electric motors and farm generators in the postwar economy of the 1950s. In 1968, Dyna-Technology purchased the Wincharger division from Zenith, eventually moving the company's small motor business to Sioux Center, Iowa.
